Momentum is building for the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82)! We’re urging Congress to seize this opportunity to eliminate the unfair WEP and GPO provisions that penalize our retired educators.
September 25, 2024
Dear Representative
On behalf of the Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA) and our over 40,000 dedicated members, I am writing to urge you to support the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82), which seeks to eliminate the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).
MSTA advocates for and empowers public educators so they can focus on teaching and shaping the future of Missouri’s students. The WEP and GPO provisions currently in place unjustly penalize retired educators and their families by reducing the Social Security benefits they have rightfully earned through years of hard work and public service. These provisions not only affect the financial well-being of our retirees but also serve as a deterrent for talented individuals considering a career in education.
Why Repealing WEP/GPO Matters:
- Financial Fairness: Educators have contributed to Social Security through other employment and deserve to receive full benefits without unjust reductions.
- Attracting Quality Educators: Eliminating these provisions will make the teaching profession more attractive to potential educators, addressing teacher shortages.
- Strengthening Retirement Security: Repealing WEP/GPO will enhance the financial stability of retired educators, allowing them to live with dignity and contribute positively to their communities.
This critical legislation enjoys strong bipartisan support and must be passed before the end of the congressional session. By supporting H.R. 82, you will help ensure that Missouri educators receive the full benefits they have worked so hard for and encourage future teachers to serve our communities.
We hope you will join MSTA in advocating for Missouri’s students and educators. If there is anything I can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
Bruce Moe
Executive Director
