Breakout Session Descriptions

Membership Management (In a Large District)

Join Shellie as she shares practical tips, lessons learned, and proven systems from her 15+ years as a Membership Chair in a large district. This session will focus on effective membership management, maintaining accurate records, and strategies that help streamline processes and support membership growth.

Presented by: Shellie Wolfenbarger, Blue Springs R-IV

Growing Your Membership (Membership Recruitment in a Large District)

Members are the foundation of MSTA. In this session, participants will gain ideas on how to recruit not only teachers, but all staff within their district. Amy will also share strategies for staying organized with deadlines and responsibilities while serving in a larger district.

Presented by: Amy Phillips, Lee’s Summit R-VII

Click. Send. Connect. Engage. (Membership Engagement)

This session introduces practical ways to communicate effectively with members, even if the tools are new. Please bring your technology (laptops, tablets, and cell phones) as participants will explore which platforms can be used to build and maintain a CTA website, access member rosters, and communicate through texting, email, and social media.

Through modeled examples and simple strategies, leaders will strengthen their ability to craft clear, concise messages that drive engagement. Time for questions and discussion ensures participants leave ready to apply these tools at the local, regional, and state levels.

Presented by: Jeffery Pettibone, Springfield R-XII

Planting the Seeds: Growing Strong Connections Through Simple Actions (Make & Take)

Strong schools don’t grow overnight—they grow when small, intentional actions are planted and nurtured over time. In this hands-on Make & Take session, participants will plant the seeds for connection, leadership, and membership growth by creating simple, affordable items designed to start conversations, support colleagues, and build relationships within school communities.

Participants will leave with ready-to-use materials and the reminder that even small efforts can grow into something impactful.

Presented by: Calli Larson (Sedalia 200); Michelle Krog (Slater); Jennifer Chambers (Ballard R-II)

The Power of One Document: How Leaders Can Centralize Communication with One Google Doc Hub

Leaders often struggle with ensuring their teams can easily access important information without searching through endless folders, emails, and files. This interactive session introduces participants to the concept of a Google Doc Hub—a single, centralized document that serves as a one-stop shop for essential team resources.

Participants will learn how to use Google Docs tables to organize sections and create a clear, navigable hub that improves communication, increases transparency, and saves time. The session will include a live demonstration, guided practice, and dedicated planning time so leaders can begin designing a hub tailored to their own association.

Presented by: Sarah Randall, Affton 101

Counting Cash & Counting Members: The Ultimate Power Duo (Leadership Time Management)

This session is designed for chapter membership chairs and treasurers who want practical strategies for organizing, tracking, and managing chapter membership and rosters. Attendees will learn how the Harrisonville MSTA Chapter structures its membership process, maintains accurate records, and coordinates responsibilities between officers, membership, and treasury roles.

The session will share timelines and tools used to update rosters efficiently and ensure clear communication within the chapter. Participants will leave with ideas they can adapt to their own chapters to improve organization, reduce errors, and support long-term membership growth and retention.

Presented by: Jason Dieckhoff, Harrisonville R-IX

Effective Leadership in Large School Districts

Leading in a large school district presents both unique opportunities and challenges. This session explores practical strategies to maximize efficiency and effectiveness, tailored to the dynamics of your district.

Participants will gain insights into key areas of leadership and leave with actionable skills to engage members, streamline processes, and drive meaningful impact in their school communities.

Presented by: Rebecca Shipley, Lee’s Summit R-VII

Small Town CTA: Celebrating Your People

Looking for ways to celebrate your CTA members and improve staff morale? This session will walk you through monthly ideas and incentives that will boost morale and show appreciation, as well as week-long themed activities for Teacher Appreciation Week.

Jaime and Michaella will provide fundraising ideas along with a list of activities for monthly motivation. Editable signs and documents will be available to help you implement these practices at the start of the new school year.

Presented by: Jaime Burger & Michaella Gantz, Kelso C-7

Fun with Fundraising

This breakout session is designed for CTA leaders who want fresh, practical approaches to fundraising that actually work. Participants will explore a variety of creative fundraising ideas tailored to today’s school communities, with a focus on maximizing impact while minimizing burnout for staff and volunteers.

The session will cover both traditional and nontraditional fundraising strategies, including low-cost, high-return events, community partnerships, and ways to increase participation from families and local businesses.

Presented by: Mackenzie Thompson, Scott Co. R-IV

Everyone Belongs: Engaging Support Staff as Valued Members

Support staff are essential to strong schools and strong local CTAs, yet they are often unintentionally left out of engagement efforts. This session shares practical, realistic strategies to better connect with support staff through communication, recognition, and inclusion.

Participants will leave with simple ideas they can use immediately to build trust and increase participation.

Presented by: Jennifer Christy, Sullivan C-2

I’m President! Now What?

Are you newly elected to the president seat of your executive board? Are you interested in being president of your local chapter? This session is for you.

Find out how to lead your group, support one another, and maintain strong membership.

Presented by: Jessica Tierney, Ed.S., Columbia 93

Building Stronger CTAs: Recruitment, Engagement & Leadership Success

Strong CTAs don’t happen by accident—they are built through intentional recruitment, meaningful engagement, and supportive leadership. In this interactive session, two experienced CTA leaders will share practical strategies to grow membership, increase involvement, and strengthen leadership capacity within your local association.

Participants will leave with ideas they can immediately implement to recruit new members, energize current members, and foster sustainable leadership within their schools.

Presented by: Valerie Parman (Tri-County R-VII); Samantha Long (Norborne R-VIII)

How Staff Relations Make or Break Your CTA

Every day we work to build relationships with our students and their families. What about our co-workers? What kind of relationship do you currently have with your colleagues?

Building a strong community builds a strong CTA. Come see how this rural school has experienced a roller coaster of relationships, including both strengths and challenges within its CTA.

Presented by: Vada Postlethwait, Chilhowee R-IV

Treasurer Spreadsheets

Discover treasurer spreadsheets designed to help make tracking CTA finances and creating reports easier. This workshop will explore spreadsheets for both large and small budgets and help treasurers save time, reduce errors, and support long-term financial transparency.

Presented by: Angel Davis, Montgomery County R-II
